The way to rainy mountain is structured to represent two journeys one was the migration of the Kiowa tribe from Montana to Oklahoma; the other was Momaday's similar journey in discovering his heritage. The Way to Rainy Mountain mixed his individual, ancestral, and ethnic stories about Indian Kiowa antiquity. Momaday posed his personal reminiscences of the culture of Kiowa and old-style ethnic stories to produce an imprint of the way of life of Kiowa that is both mystic and knowledgeable.
