The Endosymbiotic Theory was proposed by Lynn Margulis in the 1970s.
Part A: In your own words, describe what question the theory was responding to, and what the theory states. (2 points)
Part B: Identify 3 pieces of evidence Margulis used to support her theory. (2 points)

Respuesta :

Part A:

Lynn Margulis proposes that eukaryotic cells evolved from a symbiotic relationship between free-living bacteria and a protist cell. The relationship began as mutualistic and evolved over many years to become an obligate symbiotic relationship. The bacteria offered energy for the protist cell while it received shelter in return.

Part B:

Three pieces of evidence Lynn uses to support her theory is;

Mitochondrial and chloroplast have their own genetic material which is similar to today’s prokaryotes

Both organelles are bound by a double membrane

Each cell has to inherit these organelles from their parent cell and cannot code for them from their nucleosomal DNA.
