Gametes are the sex cells. As in the asexual and sexual reproduction. Asexual reproduction has only 1 organism, like cloaning. And sexual reproduction is the mixing of 2 organisms. I would get into the details, but I don't have any rights on that. So basically to recap, gametes are the sex cells.

To an adult I would say "A mature haploid male or female germ cell which is able to unite with another of the opposite sex in sexual reproduction to form a zygote." To a teen I would say "A mature chromosome that produces in males and females is a germ cell which attaches to the other cell in the male of female in opposite sex in sexual reproduction to form a fertile cell."
