n general, carbohydrates form the main energy source for the body. They are the most efficient at producing ATP or energy (meaning they produce lots more ATP per amount of the fuel broken down).
Carbohydrates are used for the formation of energy/ATP that's why they are so essential in energy metabolism.
What are carbohydrates?
- These are the energy giving substances/food.
- When we eat food consisting carbohydrates, it breaks down into its simplest form, glucose which is transported to the cells through blood.
- The glucose get converted into glycogen in muscles and liver by insulin (hormone secreted from pancreatic cells). When required this is released as energy to perform various activities.
- The glucose is utilized to produce energy/ATP (stands for adenosine triphosphate, also known as energy currency of cell) by a process called cellular respiration.
What is metabolism?
- "Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy."
- The energy is obtained through oxidation of glucose molecule.
Hence, carbohydrates break down to form glucose which when oxidized generates ATP/energy.
