The second species lives in small bushes and frequently moves from place to place. The third species spends much of its life in holes in trees. Scientists think the three species have a recent common ancestor that lived only on the ground. They hypothesize that competition played a major role in the frogs’ speciation.

a. Identify a factor that may have caused competition among the original ground-dwelling frogs.

b. Explain how the genetic diversity of the original ground-dwelling frogs allowed them to live in different niches.

c. Using your knowledge of natural selection, explain how living in different niches led to the development of the different species of frogs.

Natural selection has to do with the idea that species that are better adapted to their habitat live longer and have the opportunity to reproduce and transfer these favorable traits.

The factor that may have caused this competition is the scarcity of food. The original ground-dwelling frogs have different genetic make up which allowed then to live in different conditions ultimately making it possible for them to adapt to various conditions.

Different species of frogs developed as they lived in different niches because the organisms had to develop traits that enable them to survive in new niches which were passed on to offspring ultimately leading to the emergence of new species.
