In most muscles, when a muscle contracts and its fibers shorten, the origin moves towards the insertion. This is true. Muscle contraction is the shortening, tightening and lengthening of muscles due to some physical activity.
During muscle contraction, one end of the muscle moves while the other end is fixed in its position. The point of attachment that moves during any action is called insertion while the point of attachment that doesn't move during action is called origin. The origin has more muscle mass and is less movable whereas the insertion has less muscle mass and is more flexible and movable. Muscle contraction occurs in the following sequence :
- formation of cross bridge
- power stroke
- dissociation of cross bridge
- cocking of myosin
The muscle unites the immobile bone at the origin which is fixed whereas the muscle unites the moving bone at the insertion. So whenever the muscle contracts and its fibers shorten the origin moves towards the insertion.
