Long John Silver is shown a very complex, cunning and self-contradictory character as he hides his true intentions from Squire to his Trelawny while posing as the ship's genius cook. He is so unfaithful and changes sides so often that one cannot be sure of his true allegiance.
A greedy, almost animalistic personality, he cares little for relationships, as seen in the ruthless murder of Tom Redruth. Still, Silver is arguably the most important and charismatic character in his novels. His physical imperfections actually show the strength of his character, demonstrating his ability to overcome obstacles with every step he takes.
He possesses obvious leadership qualities, and despite numerous casualties and alleged betrayal, he is able to keep his band of battered and surly rebels under control until the end of their quest.
