In Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences theory, interpersonal intelligence and intrapersonal intelligence are often combined into a single type of emotional intelligence.
Howard Garder is a developmental psychologist who developed the idea of multiple intelligences. He felt that traditional notions of intelligence were too restricted, and did not take into account the multiplicity of intelligences inherent in different types of people.
He gave a list of eight multiple intelligences, which covers much of the diverse abilities that people possess. These include visual-spatial, linguistic-verbal, interpersonal, intrapersonal, logical-mathematical, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, and naturalistic.
Interpersonal intelligence is a social skill that enables a person to understand and build good relations with other people. Intrapersonal intelligence is the ability to understand one’s emotional self, and a propensity to be self-reflective.
Gardner argues that interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence both make up the emotional intelligence of a person.
