Lactose, or milk sugar, is composed of one glucose unit and one galactose unit. It can be classified as a disaccharide.

Lactose is also known as milk sugar. It makes up 2-8% of milk by mass. The bond between the glucose and galactose is β-1→4 glycosidic linkage.  The human body contains the enzyme lactase to break down this sugar.

Disaccharides are the carbohydrates made up by joining two monosaccharides. The monosaccharides are joined together by glycosidic bonds through the condensation reaction. The example of disaccharides are: sucrose, lactose, maltose, etc. Disaccharides can be of two types: reducing and non-reducing.
