Sojourner Truth in her speech shows her muscular arms and the hands she does her hard work with and asks whether she is not a woman. She gives the example of Jesus Christ by saying that Jesus was also born through a woman, so women are definitely equal to men.
Truth's full name was Isabella Van Wagenen. She was born in the year 1797 in New York into slavery. Isabella became a Pentecostal preacher and a strong supporter of women's rights. Sojourner Truth traveled throughout the northeast and midwest, speaking publicly and singing her messages as well.
In the year 1851, Truth attended the Women's Rights Convention in Ohio. According to Frances Gage, who was the president of the Convention, on the second day, many male ministers showed up and argued that women should not have the same rights as men. The minister's reasoning was that women were weak and they were not equal to men. Sojourner Truth communicates her idea regarding women.
