There are four stages of demographic transition. In stage 1, pre-industrial society, the population is stable as death rates and birth rates are high and approximately in balance. In stage 3, the industrial society, the human population increases slowly as birth rates start to decrease. In stage 4, post-industrial soceity, the human population growth is zero as the birth rate reaches the same low level as the death rate.
