Because everything was chosen by politicians, many states could not choose whether or not to become slave states, so popular sovereignty allowed states to vote on whether they wanted slavery or not.
Slavery wouldn't exist if the majority didn't like it, and vice versa. People who wanted slaves couldn't say they couldn't have slaves if they chose to. Sovereignty is a political concept associated with a dominant power or supreme authority. In the monarchy, the supreme power rests with the "sovereign" or the king. In modern democracies, sovereignty rests with the people and is exercised through representative bodies such as legislatures and legislatures. The United States has three types of her sovereign government. federal, state, and tribal governments. The federal government derives sovereignty from the people, the citizens who vote. State governments acquire sovereignty from the federal government.
