If caught in burning building you should not use an elevator to evacuate because an elevator shaft provides a natural chimney. As such it can quickly fill with smoke. Fire can short-circuit the elevator call button on the fire floor and therefore cause the elevator to stop at that floor. Also, fire can cause power loss in the entire building which would also lead to being stuck in an elevator.
