Steve is a construction worker he cut his hand deeply the cut then became infected which line of immune defense was broken and his immune system

The first line of defense (the epidermis aka skin) was broken when he got the cut. When it became infected that means that bad bacteria got into the bloodstream, our second line of defense, where it was probably taken care of by white blood cells.
