It could be mentioned that Rainford is portrayed as a good hunter who thinks that man is superior to animals because  preys do not have feelings and hunting might be seen as a kind of game. However, these ideas might changed when Zaroff intents to use him as a prey. After this event, they become more alike that is to say, Rainford turns into a killer by killing Zaroff´s dog and, later on, Ivan.
On the other had, Zaroff also thinks that preys do not have feelings and hunting is a game. but he applies these concepts to human, by capturing sailors and using them as preys because he considers them weak, therefore, they are preys.
